ELCA - Evangelical Lutheran Church of America

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America resulted form a union of three North American Lutheran church bodies: The American Lutheran Church, the Association of Evangelical Lutheran Churches, and the Lutheran Church of America. The three churhes agreed to unite n 1982. They formed a 70-member Commission for a New Lutheran Church, which planned the merger. The plan was approved by church conventions in 1986, and the ELCA Constituting Convention was held April 30-May 3, 1987, with the church actually beginning operations on January 1, 1988.
The ELCA meets in assembly every two years; at its 2001 Church-wide Assembly it elected its third bishop. The Rev. Mark S. Hanson, who will be eligible for re-election at the 2007 Church-wide Assembly.
  • The ELCA is made up of 10,760 congregations, and 65 synods. The South Central Synod of Wisconsin (SCSW) is one of the 65 synods of the ELCA and one of 12 synods in Region 5 (51). Saint Peter belongs to the Wisconsin River Valley Conference of the East Central Synod of Wisconsin (ECSW).

Information you may find helpful

How do I join? - Saint Peter receives new members 2 times a year, usually in May and September; however, these dates do change from time to time. If you wish to become a member, please contact the church office at 822-6513. We will put you in touch with our pastor and also add you to our mailing and prospective lists. There will be an information sheet to fill out, and we request that you contact your previous congregation to let them know you would like a transfer or release. If you have no prior membership, please inform the office. All potential new members are asked to attend 3 one-hour orientation sessions before joining.

How do I get myself or my child baptized? - Baptism at Saint Peter is a sacrament and, as such, takes place during one of our regular worship services. If you wish to set up a baptism, please contact the Parish Administrator. We request that parents or individuals attend a pre-baptism class with the pastor prior to baptism. There is no fee for a baptism. However the cost of baptism is choosing to accept responsibility for the promise made at baptism.

How do I get married at Saint Peter? First consideration is given to members of Saint Peter or a son or daughter of a member. Non members are required to attend worship at St. peter at least 4 times 1 month prior to their wedding. An initial contact is made with the Parish Administrator, who will check the calendar for availability. You will be asked to come and get a copy of the wedding guidelines booklet at our church office. A $50 deposit is required from non-members to hold your wedding date open. Other expenses, such as organist, custodial services, etc., are due one week prior to the wedding.
